Nith District Salmon Fishery Board

The Statutory Body Responsible For The Management Of Migratory Salmonids In The River Nith Catchment
The Hatchery

Nith District Salmon Fishery Board uses hatchery produced stock as part of its overall management strategy for migratory salmonids within its jurisdiction.  The Board stocks fed fry into areas of the catchment, after initial assessment and consideration of factors that limit natural stocks.  All stocking sites are monitored annually to ensure survival of the fry.

The Board uses its hatchery facilities as an education centre where school children, anglers and other interested parties can attend in organised groups by appointment.  Seeing fish up close and the processes involved with propagation of ova focuses peoples attention to the importance of salmonids and the issues that affect them.

The Board has opened the doors of its hatchery to interested groups again this winter.  Many groups have attended at the hatchery and witnessed at first hand the process of producing salmon in the hatchery environment.  These visits provide the opportunity to promote the works of the Board and continue to be of interest to many diverse groups of people.  Dumfries Probus group visited the hatchery recently.  This was a second visit which completed the life cycle process enabling the group to see all stages of development from egg production to fed fry.
